Broiled Grapefruit Recipe

Grapefruit is a citrus gem if you prepare it the right way.  I urge people to learn to appreciate the natural flavors of fruits and vegetables because it’s healthier to eat foods that aren’t drowned in dips and spreads.  Also, knowing what a food tastes like raw allows you to successfully pair it with other flavors.  Grapefruit goes well with many things – avocado, ginger, limes, lemons, and other winter fruits.

Broiling grapefruit carmelizes the natural sugars making it a little sweeter.  With a little agave and ginger or cinnamon, you have a delicious winter fruit for breakfast or a snack.  I like it with a small bowl of cottage cheese topped with roasted pecans or walnuts.

I sent an e-mail out to a bunch of my favorite blogging friends trying to find recipe to link to.  Well, the responses ranged from “Grapefruit! Ewwwwwwww!” to those who eat it plain or with a little white or brown sugar.  If you have a recipe on-line, send it my way and I’ll add it here.

Why eat it?

This beautiful citrus fruit has many health benefits, including vitamin C, lycopene, and antioxidents.  It’s also low in calories so adding your sweeter of choice in moderation won’t tip the scale.  It’s also in season now, so the grapefruits we’re getting should be at their peak.  Grapefruit can interefere with certain prescription drugs so be sure to check your medication bottle labels or read more about it here.

  • Chelsey at The Crazy Kitchen has a mouth-watering grapefruit recipe – Tilapia topped with Citrus Salsa.  At least go by and see her pictures – I wish she was closer so she could give me lessons.
  • Ariana at Food Intolerances Cook has a refreshing Grapefruit-Pineapple Punch sweetened with stevia to taste.
  • Jenna at Newlyweds has a grown-up Pink Grapefruit Cocktail.
  • Sandy at Someday You’ll Thank Me has a light and nourishing Spinach & Grapefruit Salad.

Broiled Grapefruit
serves 2

1 grapefruit
2 teaspoons agave
2 pinches of ground ginger or cinnamon (optional)

Wash the grapefruit and cut it in half.  Use a small paring knife to cut around the outside of the grapefruit.  Top each half with one teaspoon of agave, using the back of the spoon to rub it into the fruit.  Sprinkle with ginger or cinnamon.  Broil for 3 minutes, or until grapefruit is warm and caramelized in places.  Serve warm.
